In November we began the process of going through all of the bunker on the golf course and checking sand depths, moving and redistributing sand throughout the bunker and tilling the bottoms of the bunkers. I am happy to say that all 88 bunkers on the golf course have been completed!
This practice has done several important things:
1.) We have insured that all of the bunkers are a uniform and playable depth. We will continue to monitor this throughout the golf season to make sure we stay on top of the playing conditions.
2.) By tilling the bottoms of the bunkers, we have improved drainage while also making the bunker easier to lay out of. The low areas of the bunkers tend to become very compacted. When this happens the sand is very firm and hard to hit the ball off of. Additionally, when the sand is compacted it doesn't drain as it should resulting in discoloration of the brilliant white SP-55 bunker sand.
3.) This project also allowed us to put a crisp new edge on all the bunkers while we were in them doing work. A crisp bunker edge gives great definition and improves aesthetics while also clearly defining the edge of the hazard for ruling prurposes.
The extremely mild "winter" weather made this project move along at a good pace. Typically in the winter the bunkers will become frozen from time to time. When the sand is frozen this task cannot be completed. We have been very fortunate with the weather this year and look forward to seeing the warm weather continue into the spring!
